Personality: Despite being well thought of by most Souls, Koori has flaws just like everyone else. He is still quite young by the standards of Shinigami, and due to his inexperience is often prone to acting without thinking things all the way through. Because of this he has begun to rely on advice from some of the Captains with more experience and can be hesitant to act without first consulting with someone. He is also rather free with money, prompting some members of the Gotei 13 to keep a close eye on the funds for the Seireitei.
In spite of these flaws, his tenure as the Head Captain has so far been quite successful. His kind, calm demeanor makes him more approachable than Genryusai Yamamoto or Kyoraku Shunsui, his predecessors. His rational way of thinking and his skill at determining people's motivations have allowed him to lead with a fair and level hand. His handsome appearance has made him quite popular with the Shinigami woman's society, though he at least effects not to be aware of this. Additionally, his strength in battle has helped ensure the continued safety of the Soul Society.

Bio
Koori was the younger of a set of twins born into a small family in one of the middle districts of the eastern section of the Rukongai. His childhood was fairly normal, with his parents running a small shop that would repair whatever people brought in.
However, his world was shaken when his brother was killed by a group of thugs from the Inuzuri district, who passed through on their way to attempt to raid the Seireitei. The incident caused Koori to descend into a blind rage, during which his spiritual powers awoke and he killed many people, including his parents. When he was finally stopped by a group of Shinigami, he fell into a deep depression. He was thrown in prison and all but forgotten, left alone with his guilt.
He remained imprisoned for two decades, receiving only occasional meals and brooding over his actions. Finally, he came to the conclusion that he would join the Shinigami and work to protect others from similar tragedies. After another two years of constant requests, he was allowed to take the test to join the Shinigami academy, which he passed. While his raw power was nearly unmatched by the other students, his control was horrible, and his powers often ran amuck. The Gotei 13 were eventually forced to seal a portion of his ability in order to prevent it from overwhelming him.
After getting held back longer than nearly any other student in Seireitei history, he finally managed to graduate from the academy, even managing to gain one of the top three places in his graduating class. Upon graduating, he immediately enlisted in the 7th Division, as they were the ones responsible for keeping the peace in the Rukongai. He was called to account several times for his harsh treatment of criminals, especially those taken in the Inuzuri district. After nearly being court-martialed, he was reassigned to the 4th Division, where it was hoped he would learn some compassion.
At the start, Koori hated his life in the Medical Corps. His harsh views on criminals prompted him to refuse to treat some patients, and his Zanpakuto was confiscated after he nearly killed one man from the Inuzuri district. Over time, however, the gentle nature of the work he was doing and of those around him began to have the desired effect. His manner and outlook had begun to change, and he had begun to show compassion even to people from criminal backgrounds. After a decade in the Medical Corps without further incidents, his Zanpakuto was returned to him. It was then that he began to hear its voice.
As his personality continued to improve, his link with his sword began to grow stronger, and the seal on his power began to weaken. After an initial flare of alarm among the higher-ups, it was decided that his seal would be modified to allow it to slowly erode away, granting him gradual access to his powers. As hoped, by the time his seal had completely worn away his power was under control. With the removal of his seal, he was at last able to understand the voice of his Zanpakuto and awakened his Shikai.
As the decades went by and Koori's abilities and personality continued to improve, he began to rise through the ranks of the Gotei 13. His first seated position was within the 4th Division, where he took the seventh seat and given responsibility for a small clinic out in the Rukongai. This posting put him to the test, as he received many patients who he previously would have turned away. Though he at first expressed misgivings about the posting, he came to understand that the role of Shinigami was not only to punish but to protect as well. With that realization, he was at last able to put aside the anger he'd harbored toward those who had killed his brother and feel compassion for the people of the Rukongai.
Within a few years, he was offered a position as the third seat of the 10th Division, under the leadership of Captain Hitsugaya Toshiro. Upon accepting, he was informed that this transfer was about more than recognizing his strength and ability. As another user of an ice type Zanpakuto and someone who had the potential to reach the rank of Captain someday, it had been decided that Captain Hitsugaya would be the best person to help him master his abilities.
After several decades of training, he came to master his abilities and was offered the position of 10th Division Lieutenant when the former Lieutenant passed away. He served in the post for seven decades, working alongside the aged Hitsugaya until the Captain's death. During this time, he had finally managed to awaken his Bankai, and no one was surprised when he was chosen to take the Captain's exam and passed with flying colors.
He served as the Captain of the 10th Division for fifty years, until the death of Head Captain Kyoraku Shunsui. After a great deal of consideration by both the Gotei 13 and the Central 46, it was decided that Koori would take up the mantle as the third Head Captain because, despite his relative youth, he was widely considered to be the strongest Captain in terms of raw spiritual power. It has been fifty years since then and for the first time since the fall of Aizen, an emergency that could doom all of Soul Society has begun to emerge.
